Website redesign price: what a redesign costs in South Africa
What a website redesign costs with us, in rand and incl. VAT: which price fits which job, what is quoted separately, and what the new site costs to run.
The website redesign price you are quoted depends on what the new site has to do, more than on how it will look. With us, a custom-designed site of up to eight pages costs R15,000 (ZAR) incl. VAT. A site with one of an online store, bookings, a membership or courses starts at R25,000, and custom systems start at R65,000, quoted after a free first discovery.
This article is for an owner in South Africa who already has a website. It sets out which price fits which job, what is quoted separately, and what the new site costs to run. When a site needs replacing, and how to keep its Google rankings, are covered in our website redesign guide.
Website redesign prices, job by job
Several different jobs get called a redesign, and each has its own price. Start with the row that describes your site.
| The job | Our price, incl. VAT | Your existing content |
|---|---|---|
| Changes to a site you keep | Quoted per task before we start | Stays where it is |
| A new custom-designed site of up to 8 pages (Business) | R15,000 | Moving it across is quoted separately |
| A site of up to 20 pages with one of a store, bookings, a membership or courses (Professional) | From R25,000 | Moving it from your existing site is included |
| A rebuild of a site that isn’t worth saving | From R15,000, quoted after a R2,220 assessment that is credited | Brought across |
| A custom system, or moving an old one | From R65,000, quoted after a free first discovery | Scoped in discovery |
A Business site is typically ready in two weeks and a Professional site in four. Everything each package includes is set out on our website pricing page.
Why do website redesign quotes vary so much?
Quotes vary because “redesign” covers different jobs, and because each quote includes different things. The main differences are what the site has to do, how many pages it has, whether the design is custom, who moves your existing content and who writes the words. Compare what each quote includes before you compare the totals.
What the site has to do
This moves the price most. A site that presents the business and takes enquiries is our Business package. One that also sells, takes bookings, runs a members’ area or hosts courses is Professional, which includes one of those four. A site that needs custom plugins or has to connect to other software is custom work, scoped in the discovery phase.
How many pages, and how they are designed
Business covers up to eight pages and Professional up to 20. Those are limits, so count your pages before you compare. Both are custom designs. We don’t use paid themes, and a quote built on a ready-made template is a different job from one designed for your business.
Who moves what you already have
An existing site has pages, images and downloads to carry across. On Professional that move is included. On Business it is quoted separately. If any page addresses change, ask any supplier, us included, whether redirecting the old ones is in the price. Moving a website without losing traffic explains what the move involves.
Who writes the words
A redesign is often when the words get rewritten. On Business and Professional you supply the content, and we give you a structured content brief and one editing pass at no charge. If you would rather we wrote it, copywriting is R975 a page.
What is quoted separately from the redesign price?
Work outside the package you choose is quoted per task before we start, so you see the price of each extra before agreeing to it. In a redesign, check four things first: the words, moving your content on the Business package, photography and ongoing SEO. None of them is part of the Business price.
Three other costs sit outside the build. We register and renew domain names, and quote their prices on request. A paid plugin you want is licensed to your own account, at your cost. And hosting and care are monthly prices, covered in the next section.
If another quote is much lower than ours, these are the lines to check first. Website design quotes compared goes through them one by one.
What does a redesigned website cost to run?
With us, managed hosting is R450 a month incl. VAT, and a care plan, which includes the hosting, is R975 a month, or R2,450 a month with two hours of changes. These are separate from the redesign price. Hosting alone doesn’t cover updates, fixes or content changes; a care plan does the updates.
After launch, Business comes with 30 days of support and Professional with 60. In the first 30 days, anything that breaks because of our own work is fixed free. A care plan runs on our hosting, not on hosting someone else manages.
A site that serves a business for years gets rebuilt along the way, so the redesign price is one cost among several. Tin Soldier has been a client since 2005, and we most recently rebuilt its site in April 2025. The running costs nobody quotes covers the monthly costs in full.
How do you pay for a website redesign?
With us, you pay a 50% deposit to start and the balance when the site goes live. Where the work can’t be priced without looking first, it starts with a paid assessment, credited if you go ahead, or, for a custom system, a free first discovery. Every price is in rand and includes VAT.
When is a smaller job enough?
A smaller job is enough when the site works and only its content is out of date. Pay for changes, not a redesign: we quote them per task before we start, or our full care plan includes two hours of changes a month. A redesign earns its price when the site itself holds the business back.
On the care plan, a change means replacing existing content with new content. Unused hours don’t carry over to the next month, and new pages or features beyond the two hours are quoted.
A hacked site is a separate case. A clean-up starts at R5,200 incl. VAT, with a care plan of at least three months paid on top. A rebuild is for a site that isn’t worth saving. Both are part of our website rescue service. Our guide to how much a website costs in South Africa covers the prices of new sites.
What should you ask before accepting a redesign quote?
Ask what job is being quoted, what the price includes, and what you will pay each month once the site is live. Get the answers in writing. A quote that answers the questions below can be compared with any other, whatever its total.
- Is this a refresh, a redesign, a rebuild or a move?
- How many pages does the price cover, and is the design custom?
- Who moves the existing content, and is that in the price?
- Are old page addresses redirected to the new ones, and is that in the price?
- Who writes the words, and what does that cost?
- Does the price include VAT?
- How long is support after launch, and what do hosting and care cost each month?
- Will you see the new site on a staging copy before it replaces the old one?
- Is the site yours to move?
Our answer to the last one: your website and its content are yours, and you can move them wherever you like.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to update an existing website?
It depends on the size of the update. With us, a single change is quoted per task before we start. If the site changes often, our full care plan is R2,450 a month incl. VAT and includes two hours of changes each month, along with the hosting and updates. New pages or features beyond those two hours are quoted separately.
How to redesign an existing website?
Start with the job, because the job sets the price: a refresh, a redesign, a rebuild or a move. Count the pages, decide who moves the existing content and who writes the words, and get the scope and the price in writing before work starts. Our website redesign guide sets out the steps in order, from deciding what the site must do to launch.
Can I design my own website for free?
Yes, within limits. Wix’s free website builder page says you can build and publish a site free, but connecting a custom domain, removing ads and selling through an online store need a paid plan (as at 2 October 2026). WordPress can be used without any licensing fees, says WordPress.org’s features page, but it needs a host to run on, as WordPress.org’s requirements page sets out. Either way, the design and the upkeep are then your own work.
